SOCIAL & ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

VOICES RISING is a group committed to speaking into Current Events with the Gospel voice of justice and concern.  The group is open to anyone whether a member of the parish or not.

The grounding for our voice is a theological understanding of both creation and our relationship to one another as children of God.

Some of our Activities

  • Letter of concern to the Church in Nigeria regarding its support for legislation that will infringe on the human rights of gay and lesbian citizens of that country.

  • Letter of concern to the Archbishop of Canterbury in the same regard and expressing disappointment at his silence on this matter

  • Letter urging the Federal and Provincial Governments to raise the minimum wage to $10

  • An invitation to other churches and faith groups to participate in a petition to raise the minimum wage to $10

  • Working with the local community to identify social concerns in the Dundas and William Street area faced by residents and the street population to put in place short, medium and long term goals and to advocate for action from appropriate groups to address these issues.

  • Prepared questions for consideration during the last Municipal Election in London for distribution to other churches and hosted "All Candidates Debates" for both Ward 13 (in which the church physically sits) and Ward 4 (where much of the parish outreach takes place)

  • Development of a petition around both Affordable Housing and Subsidies for Child Care Programs to Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments.

  • Lobbied local, provincial and federal government in support of  Child Care programs

  • Promoted the "Carbon Fast' in 2010
